Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies

Homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies are amazing and taste every bit delicious as they sound!

With my youngest son, I breastfed him for 10 months and it wasn’t easy.

With my milk supply fluctuating all the time I decided it was time to give lactation cookies a try which is something many moms swear by (hey, that rhymed).

There are many ways you can increase your milk supply.

From eating certain foods to taking certain medications and I’ve tried many because I was determined to give my son breastmilk since I know it’s what is best for him.

My favorite way yet: lactation cookies!

Who knew you could increase your supply with a delicious cookie? I am all for anything sweet! But, if it also helps feed my son then I call that a total-win!

In fact, I also found more delicious lactation cookie recipes that you just have to try!

What are Lactation Cookies?

Lactation Cookies are regular cookies with ingredients that are added and known to help increase/boost milk supply in breastfeeding moms.

One of the most important ingredients that you cannot substitute is the brewer’s yeast.

Brewer’s Yeast is a prime ingredient for this recipe and is one of the main ingredients that boost your supply so make sure to include it.

Another tip: Drinks lots of water. Luckily, eating these will make you thirsty. Just be sure to increase your water intake.

Where can you find Brewer’s Yeast?

Sometimes you can find the Brewer’s Yeast at your local Whole Foods store or some other health foods store. However, I’ve found it expensive or hard to find. My favorite place to snag it is on Amazon. This is the exact one I buy:

Although this is the main ingredient, one of these canisters can easily last you through several batches of cookies. Just don’t overdo it on the Brewer’s Yeast. I will say, it has a very distinct taste and adding too much, will make the cookies taste strange.

Luckily, the one I linked to above, has a reduced bitterness taste so you shouldn’t taste it at all.

Oh and buying it on Amazon will give you free 2-day shipping for prime members. If you aren’t one, you can start a free 30-day trial here to place your order and then cancel after the trial should you wish.

Can kids eat these too?

Of course, I promise these won’t make men or anyone (besides women) start lactating. 😉

In fact, when I made these while I was still breastfeeding my son, I could hardly keep my husband and son’s hands off them! They are that good!

We have a peanut allergy in our home, can we substitute the peanut butter?

Yes! If you have a kiddo or someone in your family with a peanut allergy, you can swap out the peanut butter for SunButter. I have used the “natural” one in this same recipe and it tastes the exact same.

In fact, our youngest son has been found to have a peanut allergy so we keep it out of our house. We exclusively use SunButter in replacement and it works/tastes wonderful!

Ready to make some cookies?

Here are the basics you need to get started making these lactation cookies:

  • Brewer’s Yeast (do not substitute)
  • Flaxseed Meal
  • Slow Rolled Oats (found these in the bins at my local health foods store)
  • Organic Dark Chocolate Chips (the organic one’s taste even better)
  • Peanut Butter or SunButter (for those with peanut allergies)
  • Butter
  • White Granulated Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Water (you can also use milk if desired)
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Vanilla
  • Cinnamon

Once you have all your ingredients it’s a pretty fool-proof recipe. The only exception is that you need to mix the water with the Flaxseed Meal in a small bowl and allow it to sit for 5 minute prior to mixing into the rest of the ingredients.

From there it’s all about mixing, mixing and more mixing until your cookie dough is ready to roll into balls and place on your cookie sheet.

I like to use my KitchenAid stand mixer. This mixture ends up being sticky and thick, so I find it easier to use my stand mixer for mixing.

Once you are done mixing, make small 2-3 inch sized cookie balls and place them onto a greased cookie sheet.

Then you bake em’ and enjoy them!

This recipe makes about 40 lactation cookies (depending on how big you make them) so you will have some on hand for awhile!

The beauty of this recipe is that is does increase milk supply but if you are not breastfeeding it’s perfectly fine to make as an overall healthier cookie for your family.

I highly recommend purchasing the ingredients from your local health food store and purchasing organic for taste and to avoid all those extra calories.

I had several friends and family members try these cookies and they loved them! Make sure to give them a try and come back to let me know what you think!

Homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 13 minutes
Total Time 23 minutes
Servings 40 cookies

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoons Brewer’s Yeast do not substitute
  • 2 Tablespoons Flaxseed Meal
  • 3 Cups Slow Rolled Oats found these in the bins at my local health foods store
  • 2 Cups of Organic Dark Chocolate Chips the organic one’s taste even better
  • 3 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter
  • 1 Cup of Butter
  • 1 Cup of White Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Cup of Firmly Packed Brown Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Cups of Flour
  • 4 Tablespoons of Water you can also use milk if desired
  • 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon of Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix the water with the Flaxseed Meal in a small bowl and allow it to sit for 5 minutes.
  • In the meantime, combine the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, and the eggs in a bowl and beat with a mixer for 2-3 minutes until all ingredients are well mixed.
  • Add the flaxseed to the mixture until well blended and set aside.
  • In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and brewer’s yeast. You can use a spatula to mix the ingredients together. Combine this mixture to the butter mixture which takes another 1-2 minutes.
  • Stir the oats, chocolate chips, and the peanut butter into the mixture until well blended.
  • Using a tablespoon scoop out mixture and place onto a lightly greased cookie sheet. I used my hands to create little balls of cookie dough. Make sure to space them about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 10-13 minutes depending on your oven. Mine were baked for exactly 13 minutes then I allowed them to cool on the pan for another 3-4 minutes and they were baked perfectly.
  • Serve and enjoy!

These are so so good. Recipe made about one million and I've been eating about 5 every day because I can't stay away. Even days later these cookies stay soft and tender and delicious. My only complaint is that after I eat a bunch of them I get a stomach ache. :P

For anyone wanting to decrease the sugar a little bit: I made these with a zero calorie monk fruit sweetener (1/2 cup sub for half of regular sugar) and the Swerve brand brown sugar (again 1/2 cup for half the brown sugar). They came out quite tasty!

I also subbed quick oats and white chocolate.
