Everywhere I look there is something relating to STAR WARS. Yes I get it, Star Wars is awesome and everyone is so excited for the new movie. So of course, I am here thinking up ways to bring more of the force into our home. Today that force brought me the idea to make these Star Wars Chewbacca Cookies that are entirely made from scratch! I have grown fond of making my own homemade sugar cookies with royal icing. It’s become a hobby of mine and yes they turn out delicious every time! I am still experimenting but I cannot wait to see what I can come up with next!

I do want to mention that these cookies seem like a lot of work but once you get all the supplies you need and make a few batches, they will become so easy to make!

Supplies Needed to Make Star Wars Chewbacca Cookies:

For Cookies:

  • 5 Cups Flour
  • 2 Teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 1/2 Cups Soft Unsalted Butter
  • 2 Cups Granulated Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • Santa Head Cookie Cutter

For Royal Icing:

How to Make Star Wars Chewbacca Cookies:

Directions For Cookies:

  1. Cream the soft butter with the sugar until the combination is smooth not grainy to the touch in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add all 4 eggs at one time. Continue to mix. Then add the vanilla and continue mixing.
  3. Sift the four, baking powder, and salt together.
  4. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix to make sure all ingredients are thoroughly blended.
  5. Make the dough into a ball, wrap it in cling wrap completely covering the entire dough ball.
  6. Put in the refrigerator for about 6 hours or overnight. Check to see if the dough is firm.
  7. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  8. Pull the cookie dough out of the refrigerator and sit it out to soften up a bit.
  9. Put flour out on the wood cutting board, rub flour on the rolling pin, and work some flour into the batter. (if needed)
  10. Roll the dough out on the cutting board and use the santa cookie cutter to begin to make your cookies. You will end up cutting off the tip of the santa hat in order to make it look like chewbacca.chewbacca cookies inprocess1
  11. Line the cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  12. Using a metal spatula move the cut cookies  to the parchment lined cookie sheet.
  13. Bake at 325 degrees for 8 minutes.  Check to see if the cookies are thoroughly baked.
  14. Take the cookies off of the cookie sheet and put on a wire rack to cool completely.  (About 10 minutes).

Directions for Icing:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl mixing on medium speed for 4 minutes. (except your food coloring)
  2. If icing is not stiff enough add 1/4 Cup powder sugar.
  3. Divide the icing into 2 bowls. In bowl #1, adding several drops of brown gel food coloring, stirring to blend the color.
  4. Bowl #2,  adding several drops of black gel food coloring, stirring to blend the color.
  5. Spoon each color of icing into individual  frosting bags with a #5 tips. Twist the open end of the bag to push the icing to the tip.

How to add the details:

  1. On these cookies the details are hand drawn following an outline or picture. Use a picture located on Google or a picture of this cookie as an sample to follow to add the details to the cookies.
  2. Outline and fill in Chewbacca in brown. Allow 30 seconds for the outlining to dry before filling in with the thinner* brown icing.chewbacca cookies inprocess2
  3. Squeeze the majority of the icing into a bowl then add 1 tsp of water to this and mix it in.
  4. Leave a small amount of the icing in the frosting bag for later use on the cookies.
  5. After the filling has partially dried begin to add the details.
  6. First add the dots for the eyes and a half square for the mouth in black.chewbacca cookies inprocess3
  7. Then add the hair details around the outline of the head by drawing wavy lines around the face.
  8. Allow to dry then serve up and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cream of Tartar
  • Black Food Coloring
  • Brown Food Coloring
  • Coupler Set
  • Piping Bag
  • Decorating Brush Set
  • Decorating Tip Set
  • Decorating Squeeze Bottles

Instructions
