Campfire Cones

Our family loves to go camping every summer.

We pack up our favorite camping food and road trip snacks and head to the mountains to disconnect from the busy life and connect with mother nature.

One of our must-haves is ingredients for our campfire cones.

Campfire cones are a delicious spin and fun twist on traditional s’mores. The only trick is keeping your ice cream frozen (I have a trick below) which is why we tend to make them on the first night of our camping trip.

The beauty of this recipe is, you can make this delicious dessert using any flavor of ice cream and any toppings you’d like. The possibilities are endless!

What You Need to Make Campfire Cones

How many campfire cones does this recipe make?

The number of campfire cones you can make will depend on how much you buy and how large of scoops of ice cream you use. You can easily make 12 campfire cones using 1 package of waffle cones (12 in a box), 1 package of mini marshmallows, 1 package of mini chocolate chips and a quart of ice cream.

Can I use ice cream cups?

Absolutely! You can use any ice cream cone you’d like – they even have chocolate-dipped cones!

What other toppings can I use?

You can use a variety of toppings such as Reese’s peanut butter cups, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, sprinkles, caramel topping, maraschino cherries, crushed nuts, and really any ice cream toppings you’d like.

How do you make S’mores cones?

S’mores cones are essentially the same thing as campfire cones. However, S’mores cones typically just include what you’d eat in a traditional S’more – just in a cone form. So, you’d just add mini marshmallows and mini chocolate chips (or pieces of Hershey’s chocolate) into the bottom of a waffle cone and cook over the fire the same way.

How do I keep my ice cream frozen in a cooler?

The best trick we found to keeping our ice cream frozen in a cooler during our camping trips is to use dry ice. Dry ice is much colder than regular frozen ice. We typically have a smaller cooler with a small amount of dry ice in it just for our ice cream. We also ensure we make our campfire cones the first night of our camping trip to ensure it doesn’t melt.

Can kids make these campfire cones?

The kids can help make these campfire cones. However, since you are needing to make these over an open fire, make sure there is an adult supervising at all times and take safety measures to ensure your kids do not get burned.

Can I make these using my backyard fire pit?

Absolutely! You can totally make these in your backyard fire pit. In fact, we’ve made them several times with our kids in our very own backyard.

How Far in Advance Can I Make These?

You need to make these right when you’re ready to eat them.

How to Make Campfire Cones

Start by getting your toppings together. We found it easiest to put them all on a plate or divided serving tray.

Grab an ice cream cone and put 5-7 mini marshmallows into the bottom and then top with about a teaspoon of mini chocolate chips.

Cut a piece of aluminum foil that will allow you to roll the cone inside. You want it to be big enough to have excess at the top so you can create a string of foil you’ll use to hang over the fire.

Place foil on a table and carefully wrap your cone in the foil with the cone upright (ingredients at the top). Ensure the bottom is completely wrapped tight so nothing will leak out as you cook it over the fire.

Twist the foil at the top to create a carrot-like stem then wrap this around the marshmallow roasting fork.

Hold the cone over the open flames of the campfire for about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to burn. Note: You can also do this over hot coals of a fire but it will take longer for the gooey marshmallows to melt.

Once done, remove from the heat source and allow to cool down for a few minutes before removing the foil. You can then wrap the foil around the bottom of the cone to prevent leaking.
