Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance can I make these?
You can make these 1-3 days in advance and store them in an airtight container. Keep them away from moisture.

Can I use regular food coloring?

While you can use regular food coloring, gel food coloring has a more vibrant color and it mixes easier with the cookie dough which is why I prefer it and recommended it.

How many cookies does this recipe make?
This recipe will make roughly 24-36 cookies depending on thick you roll the dough.

How to Make Conversation Heart Sugar Cookies

In the mixing bowl of a Stand Mixer, add the Butter, Sugar, and Egg, and blend with the Whisk attachment until smooth, and creamy.  Add the Vanilla, and mix until blended.

In a separate bowl, add the Flour, and Salt, and mix well to blend.  Add the Flour mixture to the mixing bowl, and mix until blended, and smooth.

Divide the dough into 5 chunks of dough and place each piece of dough in a bowl. Add gel food coloring to each bowl and mix with a spoon until the dough is the desired color, about 3 drops of color to each dough section.

Next, place the dough on a piece of parchment paper, sprinkle the dough with flour and roll out to 1/2″ thickness.

Take the heart cookie cutter and cut out hearts. Remove the excess dough from around the edges and you are ready to stamp each cookie.

Take a cookie stamp and lay it on top of one of the hearts. Press down gently and then remove the stamp and begin on the next cookie until all the cookies have been stamped.

Add cookies to cookie sheet using a spatula and bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Be careful not to burn them. I like to remove mine from the oven at about 8 minutes and let them cool on the pan to continue cooking.
