Supply Information
- Dollar Tree Stackable Snowman: These are part of the Dollar Tree plus section and are $5. It comes in 3 pieces and can typically be found at the front of the store.
- Spray Paint: For this craft we used the Rust-Oleum American Accents 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Spray Paint in Key Lime color. This was $5.98 per can. I only ended up needing 1 can.
- Grinch Vinyl Face Decal: You can make your own using a Cricut or Silhouette machine or you can purchase the pre-made Grinch face decals like we did.
- Dollar Tree Scarf and Hat: I found both the red scarf and red Santa hat at my local Dollar Tree for $1.25 each.
- Cardboard Piece or Tarp: You want to cover the surface where you’re going to be spray painting the tree. I used a large piece of a cardboard box.
How to Apply The Grinch Face Decal
If you’re using the same Grinch decals we used, there are a few adjustments you’ll need to make to ensure they stick properly to the plastic and fit perfectly on your snowman.
First, trim a small portion of the Grinch’s eyebrows to help the decal lie flat on the face of the snowman. Next, cut small slits in each corner of the decal. This will make it easier to bend and apply the decal smoothly to the snowman’s rounded surface.
When applying the decal, use a damp washcloth over the top—just like you would with a temporary tattoo. This helps the decal adhere to the plastic. Once it’s in place, gently peel away the backing paper and let it dry completely.
Helpful Tips
- Spray paint the plastic snowman in small sections, being careful not to overspray, as this can cause the paint to drip.
- You don’t need to worry about fully covering the top of the hat, as it will be covered later.
- When applying the Grinch face decal, turn the snowman head to the back and place the decal on the smoother side. If this side is positioned against a wall or another surface, no one will notice the difference.
- To secure the hat and scarf in place, simply use a bit of hot glue to attach them to the plastic snowman.
DIY Dollar Tree Grinch Snowman
Materials
- 1 plastic snowman Dollar Tree
- 1 can key lime spray paint
- 1 Grinch vinyl face decal
- 1 Santa hat
- scarf
Instructions
- Begin by assembling your snowman by snapping all the pieces into place.
- Spray paint the entire snowman, working in small bursts to avoid overspraying and dripping. Allow the paint to dry between coats until the snowman is evenly coated.
- Turn the snowman’s head around so you have a smooth, blank surface to apply the Grinch vinyl face.
- Trim a small section off the top of the Grinch decal to ensure it fits perfectly within the face area, allowing the vinyl to sit flat.
- Peel off the clear film backing and place the vinyl face onto the desired area. Using a damp rag, press gently but firmly to help the vinyl adhere to the plastic surface (similar to applying a temporary tattoo).
- Carefully remove the white paper backing from the decal and let it dry completely.
- Once dry, add a Santa hat and tie on a scarf to complete your Grinch snowman!
