If you haven’t noticed already, we love The Grinch in our house!

Every year we spend time coming up with a new fun way to celebrate one of our favorite Christmas movies – How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

A few years ago we came up with these Grinch hot chocolate bombs and they were a huge hit! In fact, they became so popular, others began creating their own versions of Grinch hot chocolate bombs (we truly were the pioneers on this one).

While these are a little time-consuming, they are quite easy to make. But trust me, this is a holiday recipe the whole family will want to be a part of!

My kids love our Grinch Punch Recipe which I ultimately made into an adult version of a Grinch Cocktail too. But now, we decided to take a sippable favorite to the next level!

This recipe teaches you how to make adorable Grinch hot cocoa bombs which are all the rage right now, especially on TikTok.

Aside from making and drinking these yourself, they make a great gift for the Christmas season.

What is a hot cocoa bomb?

A hot cocoa bomb is a chocolate ball traditionally filled with hot cocoa powder that is placed into a cup of hot milk and melts to make a homemade cup of hot chocolate.

This Grinch cocoa bomb recipe has a twist… instead of milk chocolate, we are using bright green chocolate melts (candy melts) and instead of traditional hot chocolate powder, we use white chocolate cocoa! Then we add a tiny red candy heart for Grinch’s heart to complete the perfect hot cocoa bomb for the holidays!

Step Nine: Reheat your leftover chocolate (if hardened) and use a tiny bit to stick the red heart sprinkle to the outside of the hot chocolate bomb. If the plate is still hot, you can dip the heart sprinkle into that melted chocolate and apply to the cocoa bomb.

A Few Things To Note:

  • Avoid getting the candy melts wet (as in with water) or they will seize and will be ruined.
  • The chocolate bombs need to be stored somewhere cool (at room temperature) or they will melt.
  • Avoid holding or touching the hot cocoa bombs for too long or they will melt in your hands.
  • To make a hot plate, place a microwave safe plate inside the microwave for 30 seconds and check on it. If it’s hot enough, remove with a heat resistant mitten. If not, heat for another 30 seconds until hot.
  • Avoid using green food coloring as it will cause the candy melts to seize.
  • You do not need to spray the silicone mold with cooking spray, the hot cocoa bombs pop right out without any extra steps.
  • You can place them inside sealed bags for gift giving.

I have a question. What size mold do you use for 8oz cup. Seems like there are different size spheres

    1. There is! I linked to the exact mold we used in the post. We used an 8-cavity silicone mold that is roughly 1.9″ in diameter.

  2. Can I ask where you got your grinch plush? Its so cute!

  3. I love your creativity. You gave me so many great ideas. I would never have thought about the sprinkles or about using candy melts. I will use the hearts for Valentine’s, but I’m already planning on the Grinch for next year. The mug is adorable, so I’ll be on the lookout for those and put a bomb in each one as gifts. I’m so excited! Thank you so much!

    1. Oh my gosh! Your comment totally made my day! Thank you so much! Also, I found the mug at Hobby Lobby and it was 50% off 🙂 Thank you again!!

  4. This is such a cute idea – can’t wait to try it. Can I ask where did you find your little Grinch serving plate? It is adorable.

    1. Hi Candy! Thank you! I am so glad you like this idea. I found that Grinch tray at Hobby Lobby (they had a bunch of other things too like the mug) and it was 50% off 🙂

  5. I’ve never made hot chocolate bombs before but I’ve ordered a mold and plan to try this weekend. I have the green candy melts, but I’ve read that they don’t work well in the hot chocolate – that they don’t melt well and clump up. In your video it looks like they melt completely – is that correct? Thanks!

    1. Hi Amy! I am so excited for you to give these a try! I have never had an issue with the candy melts. The video in my post shows exactly what it looks like. We did heat up our milk in the microwave and make it hot and poured it over and these melted quite nicely. Once it cooled, it was ready to drink.

  6. How much milk do you need compared to how much hot cocoa mix you put in?

    1. Typically about 8 oz. for 1 hot cocoa bomb. You just want to leave enough room in the cup to stick the hot cocoa bomb in without it spilling over 🙂

  7. Kathy Darmetko says:

Does this make your milk turn green?

    1. It does slightly. It does turn more red due to the heart sprinkle. You can see the color in the video we filmed 🙂
