I think people falsely think that once you’ve obtained that degree or taken that position, you’re stuck in that career for life.
We have to remember that as we grow older, our wants, needs and desires change and sometimes our dreams do as well. Sometimes to achieve those dreams, we have to change careers even if it’s way off from where we began.
So, how do you determine that? How can you possible determine the next step in your career?
A lot of us think about these questions and then, for as long as we can, we put off answering them.
We avoid it because the truth is, trying to answer them is scary.
What if you realize that you have reached the end of the line and there’s no way further forward than where you are today?
Honestly, throw that negativity out the window because the only thing standing in your way, is you.
It’s never going to be true to say that there’s no next step. There is, you just have to find it. You have to believe there is and work to achieve it. This isn’t motivational nonsense, it’s absolutely true.
Seriously, think about it – there is never a situation or person that couldn’t be bettered in some way – the same goes for the next chapter in both your life and career.
There’s always a new path, an exciting fresh possibility and a thrilling adventure on the horizon if you know where to look. So, let’s dive in to discover some of the options that could be ahead as you move forward in your career.
How to Determine The Next Step In Your Career
Creating Your Own Success
This is not what I would recommend as a starting point, but it should be a consideration for those at a certain stage in their life.
What I’m talking about here is moving forward with a plan to set up your own company. You should consider this option if you already have a few years of experience on the market in your chosen industry or a passion to be the driving force to build something of your own.
There’s some debate about whether you need a lot of money saved to successfully run a company and honestly, I’ve learned from experience that isn’t true.
The good news is here is that you can start a company with little to no money in your pocket. You just need a clear plan to succeed and ensure that you are ready to take a certain number of risks. If you’re not prepared to put yourself forward, you are always going to struggle to find your place on the market. This is one of the reasons why so many companies do ultimately fail even within the first year. Including many multi-level marketing businesses.
If you are someone that has no start up capital and want to avoid the business loans (which I hands-down recommend) I highly recommend starting a multi-level marking business that can give you both the skills and experience necessary to start your own company. It also has less risk involved since you are part of a well-established company. If you need ideas, feel free to reach out to me.

Be In Pursuit Of The Promotion
If you’re not ready to grow in the direction of owning and running your own business, then you may want to consider simply looking for a promotion.
If you are keen to make sure that you increase your income, apromotion is often the best route to take. With a promotion, you will also typically gain new responsibilities and develop fresh skills.
This can make your career seem more exciting and essentially like a brand new adventure. It’s a great choice if you are feeling like your current job or position has become somewhat mundane and totally ordinary. Or, if you have lost the challenge that you once felt when you headed to work each morning that gave you your drive.
So, how do you make sure that you are in line for a promotion? Well, there are a few choices you can consider here. For instance, you do need to make sure that you are a team player in your company. You should be highlighting the fact that you are ready and willing to go the extra mile in your company. It’s about ensuring that you are positioned as someone that your employer can trust and depend on.
And my best piece of advice – ask for it. Seriously, you can’t receive something if you don’t ask. The worst that can happen is your boss says no and in that case, you are just back to square one but at least you took the intuitive to try and that’s HUGE.
Those Who CAN Do, Teach
You might have heard the idea that those who fail in their position or industry end up teaching. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, people who teach are often highly skilled in their chosen career. The best workers and most successful individuals make the greatest teachers. Why is this? Simply put, they know the job inside and out so they are able to teach things that other individuals would perhaps miss.
Furthermore, those who have found success in a particular sector are also typically familiar with the most common mistakes. They may have even made the majority of them during their own career path. Again, this puts them in a perfect position to be a great teacher either in school or through college.
So, how do you become a teacher? Well, the process is perhaps a little more simplistic than you might assume or indeed realize.
If you already have a college degree, then you can simply move forward with a course like a masters in education from Exeter University. Courses like this can provide you with all the information and knowledge that you need to become a trained teacher.
Once you have a qualification or even during your course, you will then be able to gain some work experience. This will be teaching in a real classroom and gaining a first-hand account of what this new career path might be like.
You can even go as far as filming, editing and selling courses where you teach someone on a particular topic. Many people have great success with this. Teachable and Udemy are two well-known places to create and sell courses.
Live Your Life
You might want to consider whether you want more freedom in your career. It’s possible that running your own business rather than working for someone can give you this option. But ultimately, you’ll still need to take up a managing position and make sure that your business continues to run smoothly.
As such, an alternative could be to freelance. As a freelancer, you can take whatever business contracts that you want as an individual trader on the market. You might even be able to compete against the major players and undercut them with competitive pricing.
Once again, to gain success here, you need to make sure that you are delivering a quality service and improving your reputation over time. This can be a slow process but ultimately it will be worth it due to the advantages of freelancing.
As a freelancer, you will be able to operate however you want on the market and work as much or as little as you like. You won’t need to worry about meeting certain goals. Although, most freelancers are considerably goal orientated and are keen to reach certain personal achievements.
As well as being able to work when you want, you can also work where you want. This includes potentially travelling abroad and maybe taking your laptop with you. It’s not outside the realms of possibility that you could work on a beach, tanning while making money.
Side Hustle And Save
Of course, it’s also possible that you may just want to think about adding to your existing income with another injection into your account. An example of this could be blogging.
By blogging, you can make money while continuing to develop your current career. The benefit of this is that you will have an extra cushion of cash (passive income) that you can grow in your spare time rather than with another job.

Believe In You
Finally, you may just want to make sure that you become more active on social media. Believe it or not, this can be a great career step to take. With this option, you will be able to raise your online profile and ensure that potential future employers can find you on the market. This is also going to be key if you do have any goals of running your own business or even branching out as a freelancer.
We hope you find this information useful and that it does help you find the right next step in your career.
