One of the hardest aspects of being a parent is determining exactly how our children are feeling especially when it comes to having a younger children. While they have good communication skills, it’s not always easy to determine why they are having a major meltdown in the middle of the store. To really fix the issue, we have to understand what they are feeling and why. So today I would like to share with you a new way on How to Determine Your Child’s Mood Through Play. It takes all the guess work out and helps get you and your child on a much happier note which is something we all can appreciate.
How to Determine Your Child’s Mood Through Play
As I mentioned, it’s a constant challenge to determine exactly how your child is feeling and why. Asking them over and over only seems to make matters worse. The fact is, most kids (especially when they are young) have a hard time describing exactly what is wrong or how they are feeling.
As a mom, it is so hard to watch my child be upset or sad especially when I am unable to fix it. While I know it requires patience and understanding, I feel like having those strong communication skills with your child is so important. Sometimes that means thinking of a new way to communicate with them and what better way to do that than in a way that is fun? That is why I was so excited when I recently learned about The Moodsters which is all thanks to the CEO and Founder, Denise Daniels who is a Peabody award-winning broadcast journalist, parenting and child development expert and author who specializes in the social and emotional development of children.
The Moodsters are a team of five loveable little detectives that help kids solve the mysteries of feelings! This month (September) these toys launch at Toys R Us featuring these all The Moodsters products including:
- The Moodsters Talking Plush and Activity Book assortment: Moodsters Talking Plush Characters represent the five Moodsters detectives, who personify the emotions that all children experience in their everyday lives: happiness (Coz), love (Lolly), fear (Quigly), anger (Razzy), and sadness (Snorf). Each plush character articulates sayings and suggestions specific to the emotions they represent, and each comes with a 32-page activity book that helps kids learn about emotions while they’re having fun.
- The Moodster Mirror: The Moodster Mirror is an electronic talking mirror to help kids learn to recognize their feelings and make the connection between feelings on the inside and facial expressions on the outside. Kids make a happy, sad, angry, scared, or loving face into the Moodster Mirror, and they are able to see what these feelings look like to others. Includes 32-page storybook, “A Time to Be Kind,” a heartwarming story that explores the meaning of friendship.
Also launching is The Moodsters Feelings Notebook & Feelings Crayon Set, The Moodster Meter™ and The Moodsters Feeling Flashlight™.
The Moodsters teach children a vocabulary for their feelings, help them understand, express and manage their emotions, and learn simple strategies that help kids handle the everyday challenges of growing up. These are all done through beautifully illustrated stories and interactive toys kids will love to use. Plus, parents can play right alongside their children to learn how to better communicate with their children and learn how to react to their child’s particular mood. It’s a parenting win in my book!
We first gave The Moodsters Mirror a go with our youngest son. At first, he just wanted to play with the mirror but after we began reading the story to him and showed him the illustrations, he started to understand what the mirror was really for.
He began mocking the characters in the book. When a character was sad, he would frown and when a character was happy, he would smile to himself in the mirror. The mirror also has sounds and lights so it made this part of the process so fun.
I really loved how the illustrations in the book were colorful, bright, and showcase the mood so even a young child is able to understand just by the visualization of the mood. We cannot wait to continually use these toys are part of our way to decipher the code of our child’s mood on any given day. I really feel like it takes the frustration away with the not knowing, and brings us closer together as a family.
