Black Friday is just a few weeks away and let’s face it, not all of us wants to go sit in long lines just to get shoved and yelled at to save a little money!
For this exact reason you may be planning on doing your holiday shopping online this year. If you are, make sure you are ringing in the big saving tags by saving on all your holiday shipping! Shopping online can save you money but if you have to fork out hard-earned cash to have it delivered to your door then how much are you really saving?
Well don’t worry! I have gathered some tips that will help you save on all your holiday shipping needs this year! Enjoy!
#1: Sign-up for Free Membership Shipping Trials- This is a great opportunity to take advantage of. Several companies offer free trials for their memberships which include free shipping benefits. These trials are typically 30 days long and you won’t be charge until after your trial period ends. If you decide you don’t want to keep the benefits simply cancel before your 30 day expiration date and you won’t be charged. I have listed my 2 favorite companies below:
Amazon Prime Free Trial This is an awesome trial! You will receive Free 2-Day Shipping on any item on Amazon.com that contains the Amazon Prime logo. There is literally thousands of items you can choose from. This is also great to use for those last-minute items so be sure to sign-up for this one.
ShopRunner– ShopRunner is another great membership to have. They offer free shipping on participating items for several stores including: Toys R Us, Sports Authority, RadioShack and even Domino’s. Just look for the little green ShopRunner guy while shopping.
Shop Your Way Rewards from Kmart– They offer a 90-day trial. You will not be charged during your trial and you cancel before your trial ends. You will receive Free 2-Day Shipping on everything from Kmart and Sears. Plus when you Join you will get $5 in points that you can put towards your first purchase.
#2: Sign-up for Email Updates- Signing up for email for your favorite stores does not only ensure you are seeing the deals first, but a lot of times they give member only exclusives such as free shipping benefits. I have signed up for several companies recently and I have received a welcome email with a code valid for free shipping. If you don’t want your email flooded with emails then I suggest creating a separate email account just for this reason.
#3: Watch for Minimum Purchase Requirements- If you find a great deal and you are unable to receive any Free Shipping benefits then be sure to watch for the minimum purchase requirement to receive Free Shipping. Several companies do this, my suggestion to you is utilize it! For example, lets say you find a hot toy on sale and you don’t want to pass it up. It costs $20.00, the minimum purchase needs to be $45 to receive Free shipping. If you purchase this toy alone your shipping will be around $10.00 anyways + tax. So you get close to the $45.00 purchase. My advice is to purchase another small item a.k.a. “Filler item” and utilize the free shipping. That way you are not wasting $10+ on shipping alone. That money can be used to purchase another holiday gift or even used to buy some items you are running low on at home. So sometimes this works out better to meet that minimum purchase requirement.
#4: Shop Around For Best Shipping Prices- Now you may not only want to save on holiday shipping with packages you receive, but also on packages you send to family and friends during the holidays. The best way to save is to SHIP EARLY! The post office, UPS, and FedEx all have estimated delivery times. Shipping early will ensure your package will arrive on time (maybe even early) and you will save BIG! If you wait to ship right around the holiday rush you are going to end up paying a fortune. I also recommend shipping through the postal service any time you can. Not only do they have boxes where “if it fits, it ships” for one low flat rate, but they also have the best shipping prices all around. If you can’t ship via the postal service then ship UPS. I think they deliver in a timely manner and they have very good rates. Unfortunately, I have had too many packages ruined or lost when they are shipped through FedEx so I wouldn’t really recommend that route.
#5: Purchase Insurance if Applicable- Like I mentioned above, I have had too many packages lost in my days and with that being said, I suggest purchasing insurance if you can and if it is reasonably priced. Most companies (like Amazon) are really good at helping you find your package if it’s lost or will send you a replacement if it is damaged in the shipping process. However, not all companies are like this so purchasing insurance gives you a piece of mind and saves you money. If a package is lost or damaged and you have insurance, you will be ensured it will be found or replaced.
#6: Package Wisely- Whether you purchase insurance or not this is a wise thing to do. Packaging your items correctly and carefully will save you money in the long run. You can mark “Fragile” all over the box in a NEON Pink and it won’t matter during the holidays, simply because shipping companies have one goal in mind- to get your package to its destination. So just be sure to package your items using tissue paper, bubble wrap, more tissue paper, newspaper, or by placing a small box in a larger box. You can also receive assistance while shipping your package at your local postal service location, UPS, or Fedex.
