One of my favorite vegetables is Asparagus but it doesn’t always turn out tasty.
After months of trying to make perfect Asparagus, we finally figured out how and it’s totally easy.
I just can’t believe we didn’t know this secret before!
As you may know, cooking Asparagus can be tricky.
If you’re not careful, you’ll get undercooked Asparagus that is crunchy or overcooked Asparagus that is slimey and hard to chew.
You want to aim for Asparagus that has a crunch but is also full of flavor and is tender.
The perfect way to cook asparagus every time is to use a technique called blanching.
What is the blanch cooking method?
Blanching is a cooking process where a food, usually a vegetable or fruit, is scalded in boiling water for several minutes, removed and then placed into iced water.
You might be wondering if this would then mean your asparagus would end up cold?
And the answer is yes, for a brief period.
Basically, once you’ve blanched your asparagus, you’ll add it right to the pan or dish you are working with and allow it to heat up for a few minutes. This will make it nice and hot again and it’ll be ready for eating.
You can blanch your asparagus then grill it, sauté it, roast it or do anything with it as long as you only heat it for a few minutes.
How to Blanch Asparagus:
First, start by cutting your fresh asparagus into small pieces.
Next, place them into a large saucepan filled with water and bring to a boil.
Boil for 3-4 minutes and then remove from the boiling water and place directly into an ice bath (a bowl with cold water and ice).
Leave them in the ice water until you are ready to add them back into a skillet or dish where you want to heat them up.
Add them into the skillet or dish for 2 minutes only until they are hot and remove promptly.
You’ll have the perfectly cooked asparagus every time.
