Heat Treating Cake Mix

In this recipe, we use cake mix to make this Christmas Popcorn. Normally, cake mix is heated to a high temperature during the course of baking it which kills any potential bacteria that may be in the flour.

Since this popcorn isn’t baked, it contains “raw” flour. So, if you are concerned about this, I recommend heat treating the cake mix prior to making the Christmas popcorn.

The easiest way to heat-treat cake mix is in the microwave. Simply add the to a microwave-safe bowl. Then microwave on high in bursts of 30 seconds, stirring in between each burst. Use a thermometer to test the mixture in a few places to make sure it has reached 165 degrees F throughout the entire mixture.

How to Make Christmas Popcorn

Start by cooking your cake mix. Yes, cake mix should be cooked in a microwave prior to consumption because it can contain harmful bacteria and other contaminants.

The safest way to consume the flour in the cake mix is to heat-treat the flour before consumption (see below in the recipe card on how to do this).

Once that is done, add all of your ingredients together and mix well.
